The Calloway, Lisbon

Boutique hotel · Alfama · 32 rooms

Tiled facade of The Calloway

Overview

The Calloway occupies a restored nineteenth-century townhouse on one of Alfama's quieter lanes. The tiled facade is the first thing you notice; the second is how still it is inside, given how close you are to the centre.

Rooms are arranged over four floors around a narrow stairwell, with a small lift added during the renovation. Interiors lean on pale oak, linen and local ceramics rather than anything flashy.

Service is personal in the way small hotels manage best: staff learn your name quickly and the front desk keeps a hand-drawn map of the neighbourhood for guests.

Rooms

Entry-level Classic rooms are compact at around 16 square metres, and the ones facing the lane can catch some evening noise in summer. Superior rooms on the third floor are the sweet spot, with tall windows and Juliet balconies.

The two Terrace Suites share the top floor with the rooftop bar. They're the most memorable rooms in the building, but book early: they're often gone months ahead for spring and autumn.

Bathrooms are modern throughout, with walk-in showers; only the suites have baths. Air conditioning is quiet and effective, which matters in a Lisbon July.

Location

Alfama rewards walking, though its hills and cobbles are not for everyone. The 28 tram stop is ten minutes away, the river five, and the castle a steep fifteen.

Taxis can reach the door, but the lane is narrow; drivers sometimes stop at the end of the street. Guests with mobility needs should mention it when booking.

Breakfast and dining

Breakfast is served in a vaulted room on the ground floor: pastries from a bakery up the hill, eggs to order, fruit and good coffee. The rooftop bar opens at five and serves small plates until late.

There's no full restaurant, but the neighbourhood more than makes up for it, and the staff's list of nearby tascas is worth asking for.

What guests say

"The rooftop at sunset was the highlight of our trip. Staff remembered our anniversary without being asked."

"Lovely building, but our Classic room was smaller than the photos suggested."

"Perfect base for exploring on foot. Bring comfortable shoes for the hills."

Our verdict

For travellers who want character and calm in the oldest part of the city, The Calloway is an easy recommendation. Light sleepers should ask for a room away from the lane.
